Aa a result of this connection, on the 12th of 'October the it Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Eail road will begin running solid trains through from Cincinnati to Jacksonville, Pa. Ever lnce the East Tennessee finished, the out Knoxvilie and Ohio to Jellieo it has been trying to get into Cincinnati by franchises from Junction City to that place, but has been unable to effect 8atlRfatory ar rangements. The Kentucky Central had been finished to Richmond, and it was only necessary to complete this road from that point to Livingston, a station on the Jellieo Line, and there would be a line from Knoxvilie to Cincinnati. There was, thereof ore an object in the East Tennessee Syndicate to secure the Kentucky Central and close the existing gap. The Erlanger system was opposed to that being done and considerable diplomacy ensued, which resulted in giving the East Ten nessee some showing, but not of an entirely satisfactory nature.

It was plain that while throttled by the Erlangers there could be nothing of a competing nature. Negotiations for franchises were continued, the Central was secured and finished to Livingston, and consequently there will hereafter be a line for both freight and travel between this city and Cincinnati that will be a warm rival of the Southern. This will also onen a com petition for trade laetween East Tennessee and Cincinnati and give an outlet for East Tennessee products, There ia no telling what efiect the new line will have on the trade or products of Kast Tennessee. Between this city and Knoxvilie large bodies of gravelly ridge lands exist which are adapted to the produc tlon of fruits and vegetables, but not to corn and wheat, and for want of a market they have been worthless, except for timber. These lauds can be bought at very low figures, and if the East Tennessee Road of i fers low rates for the shipment of fruit' and vegetables the lands will bo sought forthat purpose, and will become a source of wealth ana prone The Norfolk, Cbattaiwaga and New Orleans Road.

Few persons even an approximate idea of the value and extent of the coal fields contiguous to Winter's Gap or the number of first class mines now opened there and ready to pour their products into your city, to be used in your manufactories, and distributed to the markets of the South, Southeast and Southwest tor I assure you that the uaUty of this coal will carry it into any Southern market. The railroad Is soon to be extended to the great Coal Creek mines, and then those mines will have a competing line to Chatta books, and Knoxvilie will become a way station in the building up of the Southern trade for the output of the Jellieo, Coal Creek, "Winter's Gap and all other coal prop erties from Cumberland Gap to Big Emory Gap, and your city will receive the benefits of the development of this wonderful min era! region; fox no person conversant with Chattanooga's location and the enterprise of her people will, doubt for a moment that it will not be the place that will dra the bulk the manufacturing enterprises and also become the great distributing point for the South. Work is to begin soon on other branches of this new system of railroads, and, I may add, that this new system will bo in thorough accord with the Queen and Cres cent system, and the two will pass through the best sections Jthe South. I will en deavor to keep yon posted. The Bridge Nearly Ready for The news received yesterday from the Pontchartrain bridge by Mr.

Barnard Brown, General Freight and Passenger Agent of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad, was indeed cheering and encouraging. Marsh, who built the Mount Washington road, will be engaged to superintend the Lookout Mountain Road. Honest Men. The honesty of railroad men is aptly illustrated in the paymasters, who monthly handle hundreds of thousands of dollars without one cent's loss to the companies. The past history of railroading furnishes but two cases where the railroad paymasters nave acea tne rascal or stolen iunus. They Couldn't Read and Write.

During the last fifty years several attempts nave oecn maueto 101m oyster banks in tne Baltic. The first attempt was made about forty years ago. when a quantity of European oysters were laid down, but it proved failure, and the oysters soon died. In recent years, however, experiments have been made wiin tne American oyster (ustrea ttrainifnui which, according to the researches of Pror. Mobius, is a different variety of the Euro pean.

The idea of laying down Americau oysters in the Little Beltlwas due to Mr. Meyer, an engineer of XIadersleben, who formed a company for the purpose of carrying it out, to which the Prussian Government granted a concession for forty years to form oyster banks up to lat 65 N. In the autumn of 1879 Mr. Meyer went to the United States. whence he brought back to Haderslelea a million and a half small and half a million large oysters, which were laid down in ten diflerent places from the Danish frontier to the southern part of the Als Sounds Re cent examination of these spots have shown varying results.

In some there are only a iew oysters lert, ana in others considerable quantities. here seaweed is very plenti ful the oysters have died. The best result was found on the southeast coast of Als. During the present summer fresh attempts at oyster hatching are to be made in these parts, and the German Fishery Association has granted Prof. Mobiusa sum of about fifty pounds toward expenses.

On the west coast of Norway, too, strenuous efforts havo been made in recent years to Improve the oyster nsnenes mere, wnicn were lormeriy very important. Helen bar: The steamship Walla Walla was secured, and with Capt. John Gates on board steamed down to the obstruction. The plans previously prepared by him were put into im mediate operation. Anchors were cast, and with the Government tugboat as a tender the ponderous propeller began its revolu tions. The surface of the broad Columbia was churned into a foam and at once began the shifting of thousands of tons of sand.

The same forces were employed to remove them that nature nad employ ed in placing them there. The work went steadily onward and as the steamer was hauled forward it was ascertained that the grandest results were being achieved. When she began there would have been ten feet of water at zero, and as she was lowered away the depth had been increased to 27 feet, with a channel averaging 175 feet In width. This gives 22 feet of water at the lowest stage. The work was pushed with all rapidity, and at the close of the eighth day a channel 1600 feet long and 27 feet deep had been cut through, giving an abundance of water for the passage of the largest ship tnai visits tne west coast.

In fact, the river is too low for navigation and verv little in the way of transportation facilities can be expected in this line. The river is way below zero and is still seeking low bottom. The ap propriation of $25,000 will be entirely consumed in doing the work for which it was allotted.
