Crete is the best place for solo travelers who want an adventure, for families who are after an unforgettable resort experience, for young couples on a romantic getaway, or for groups of friends who are determined to party like there’s no tomorrow.

You visit Crete for its sandy beaches, the Greek hospitality, the road trips, the day trips, the famous archaeological sites, the food that captures the essence of the Mediterranean cuisine, the luxury resorts, the family-run BnBs…and I could go on and on!

The point is this. Whatever it is that you want Crete offers it.

7 Things You Need To Know About Your Stay in Crete

Before we get into the details of your visit to Crete, here are 7 important facts you need to keep in mind when planning your trip.

1) Crete is the largest island in Greece. This means that you need to plan your trip wisely to make the most of it, especially if you’re short of time.

2) Crete is divided into four geographical units. Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Lasithi. Each one is very unique and you could easily focus on just one for your entire trip. Even if you’re planning on visiting Crete for a month!

3) It would take you approximately 4 hours non-stop to travel from the west of Crete to the east. And with so much to see in between, Crete is a great destination if you love road trips. Just beware of the local drivers. My best advice is to always let them overtake you.

Where to Stay in Chania Region (Western Crete)

Chania Town- The best place in Crete for a weekend getaway.

The most beautiful city in Crete in my honest opinion. Surrounded by the majestic White Mountains of Crete, with its old Venetian port and charming old town, Chania is bound to win your heart.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (3)

Chania is perfect for a romantic getaway, a solo soul-searching weekend away, a family vacation, or a bachelorette. In other words, you cannot go wrong with Chania. But especially If you are after a short break, Chania is one of the best towns in Crete for that.

The town is vibrant and filled with fantastic tavernas and restaurants. It’s an ideal place if you’re a foodie. (Well to be honest, Crete in general won’t disappoint you when it comes to food!)

Additionally, Chania has the best nightlife in Crete in my humble opinion. You won’t find many humongous dance clubs. However, there are so many unique bars that stay open until the morning hours where you can dance the night away and meet the locals.

At the same time, it’s close tosome of Crete’s best beaches, so you can definitely stay in Chania town and do daily excursions in the extended area.

The Caribbean-like Balos beach is an hour’s drive, the stunning Falassarna beach is a 50-minute drive from Chania town, the sandy Kalivaki beach is 40 minutes away, and finally, Seitan Limani beach is hidden in a cove 30 minutes away.

Tip: Chania has so many beautiful little shops with local products like olive oil and honey, handcrafted gifts and souvenirs, and clothes. Perfect for a shopping spree!

Sfakia – Where to stay in Crete for the real Cretan experience.

This is not the place where you go to party. You go to Sfakia to admire the raw Cretan scenery, swim in the deep blue sea, and connect with nature.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (4)

Additionally, if you are the adventurous type, in Sfakia you can do snorkeling and diving. Or, if water isn’t your thing, you can enjoy walking the many trails and exploring the gorges and mountain tops.

Gavdos – This is where to stay in Crete If you’re looking for a remote experience.

Gavdos is one of those places that are very unique and will probably feel like nothing else you’ve visited before. If you’re lucky you will be accompanied by dolphins on the ferry ride to Gavdos, and trust me, when you get there you’ll be amazed by the rough scenery and unspoiled nature of this tiny island.

At least this was my experience of Gavdos and it’s one I keep close to my heart.I will never forget the haunting image of the roots of the cedar trees picking through the dunes of Ayios Ioannis beach, or standing at the lighthouse in the village of Ambelos watching the sun setting in the Libyan sea.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (5)

Gavdos is not sufficiently powered and runs mostly on electricity generators, it has no running water, and it has less than 100 permanent residents. This makes it an ideal holiday destination for those who want to turn off their phones, take a break from their busy lives, and lose themselves in the tranquility of the Greek islands.

However, it can get pretty busy and buzzing in the summer months, especially in July and August, which means that there are plenty of opportunities to socialize too!

Budget accommodation: Sleeping al-fresco at Ayios Ioannis beach. I’m not kidding! If you like to sleep under the stars don’t forget to pack your sleeping bag.

Mid-range accommodation: Gavdos Princess –Charming, clean, and spacious apartments in the village of Kastri.

Luxury accommodation: There isn’t one, and frankly you shouldn’t go to Gavdos if you’re after luxury.

Tip: Gavdos is the southernmost point of Europe. The stone-built chair built by Russian tourists in the 90s makes for the perfect photo opportunity!

Paleochora – The best family vacation in Western Crete.

There are many options if you like your beach sandy, or for that matter, if your kids love their beach sandy. This makes Paleochora the perfect destination for an easy breezy family vacation. Additionally, everything is at arm’s reach – restaurants, shops, cute cafes, and some absolutely must-see attractions.

Pachia Ammos beach and Grammenos peninsula are some of the best sandy beaches, whereas Krios beach, Gialiskari beach, and Psilos Volakas have small white pebbles.

Budget accommodation: Lito Apartments PaleochoraBudget-friendly accommodation with spacious family rooms located right in the center of Paleochora.

Mid-range accommodation: Evriali Comfort LivingLocated in a quiet neighborhood this self-catered accommodation is within walking distance from the city center and a short walk from the beach.

Luxury accommodation: Villas PlumeriaAlthough luxurious, these villas with private pools are definitely great value for money and are highly rated by families.

Tip: Paleochora is close to many walking and hiking routes such as the Pelekaniotis Gorge, the Anydri Canyon, and the Cave of 99th Saints. But, remember! You should always confirm with the locals that they are safe to walk as often if the area had heavy rainfalls this would make them dangerous.

Omalos – A plateau in the White Mountains of Crete.

Yes, you read that right! A plateau! Crete undeniably has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but did you know that it’s got beautiful mountains too?

The plateau of Omalos is perfect for those who can’t stand the heat. It’s significantly cooler even in the hottest summer months (hello, heatwave).

Omalos is perfect for those who want to trail Crete’s most famous Gorge, the Samaria Gorge.

Budget accommodation: Neos Omalos HotelBasic but clean and relatively spacious rooms, ideal for those who just need their accommodation for a good night’s sleep.

Mid-range accommodation: Mike Omalos HousesTraditional homely and rustic stone-built houses.

Luxury accommodation: Omalos VillagePerfect complex of stone-built villas ideal for those who want to combine the mountain experience with a swim as it features a stunning outdoor swimming pool.

Tip: With some luck, in Omalos you will spot Crete’s feral goats called kri-kri!

Elafonisi – The famous pink beach.

Though in fact, Elafonisi isn’t a beach. It is an island off the coast of Western Crete. When we say ‘Elafonisi’ we refer to a multitude of beaches that start from mainland Crete and out onto the island of Elafonisi.

In Elafonisi you will find some of the best beaches you’ve seen in your entire life. Famous for the crystal clear waters and the pink sand (amazing, I know!!), the beaches of Elafonisi will mesmerize you.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (6)

However, I’ll admit that I debated whether I should suggest it as a place to stay in Crete.

My concern was that, albeit breathtakingly beautiful, Elafonisi is a very touristy area that can get really packed and busy. Plus, there isn’t much else to do around there and the food in the area is rather disappointing.

So why did I decide to add it to my list of places to stay in Crete? Good question.

Because the scenery is really something to experience. And because Elafonisi is rather hard to get to, if you stayed further away it would actually take you a lot of time to get there. Finally, Elafonisi made it to my list because from there you need only about 10 minutes by car to get to Kedrodasos Beach which in my opinion is also one of the best beaches on the island of Crete.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (7)

Budget accommodation: Lafo Rooms This is a really reasonably priced hotel, especially considering its high reviews, and the location is amazing!

Mid-range accommodation: Elafonisi Resort by Kalomirakis Family This is a really reasonably priced hotel, especially considering its high reviews, and the location is amazing!

Tip: I know it’s tempting to take some of this beautiful pink sand beach back home, but please don’t. Not only that would be harmful to the local nature, but it’s also illegal.

Where to Stay in Rethymno Region

City of Rethymno –The colorful gem.

There are so many reasons to visit Rethymno. The beautiful old town with the colorful vibrant alleys, the Venetian port, and the wide range of accommodations and restaurants, really make Rethymno the perfect place for your holidays.

I highly recommend getting lost in the maze of alleyways that is the old town and exploring Rethymno at your pace. Also, the Venetian Forteza is a must-see in Rethymno.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (8)

Additionally, many beautiful beaches are a short drive away from Rethymno. I definitely recommend Spilies Beach, Livadi Beach, and Geropotamos beach.

Budget accommodation: Bellagio Luxury Boutique Hotel Clean and spacious rooms in the heart of the city.

Mid-range accommodation: Philikon Luxury Suites Gorgeous self-catering accommodation in the heart of the old town.

Luxury accommodation: Nautilux Rethymno by Mage Hotels If you love all-inclusive luxury hotels where the last cell of your body can experience the ultimate relaxation, this newly opened luxury hotel will definitely deliver.

Tip: The city beach of Rethymnon is a very clean, sandy, and highly-rated beach!

Margarites – The pottery village.

Margarites -which means daisies in Greek- is a beautiful picturesque village in Rethymnon, known for its pottery. The entire village is decorated with pottery. Honestly, it’s so cute! Don’t miss it. It’s also a great place to shop for souvenirs from Crete.

Luxury accommodation: The Quintessential Cretan Villa Well..nothing to say here. The name says it all!

Tip: The ceramics of Margarites make the perfect souvenir to bring back home!

Triopetra – Crystal clear waters on the south coast.

The crystal clear water of Triopetra beach is a reason on its own to visit the small village of Triopetra on the south coast of Crete. However, you get the amazing added bonus of being close to the beaches of Ligres and Agios Pavlos which trust me, are breathtaking.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (10)

The beaches in this part of Crete are very typical south Cretan beaches. First of all, they are big and long. Additionally, they can get wavy, and they are surrounded by a very characteristic raw and rocky scenery. The best part is that even on the busiest summer days they don’t get packed. This means that even in the heart of August you won’t have other people’s feet in your face while you’re trying to relax at the beach. Priceless!

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (11)

From Triopetra you are also a relatively short drive from Preveli, one of the most popular places in Crete. Though Preveli is rather touristy, it’s definitely worth the visit as the landscape is very unique. In Preveli you will actually find a palm forest that surrounds the river that runs down from the gorge and into the sea.

Budget accommodation: Villa Thalassa Minutes away from the beach, this property offers stunning views.

Mid-range accommodation: Triopetra Notos Hotel Built on an elevated position this accommodation also has a swimming pool if you’d rather hang out and relax in the garden.

Luxury accommodation: Triopetra Luxury Villas Fournou Lago Minutes away from the beach these stunning villas are equipped with everything you need to make your stay most comfortable.

Tip: Beware! The water in Preveli beach is rather cold.

Where to Stay in Heraklion Region

City of Heraklion – The capital of Crete.

I’m not going to lie. I don’t love Heraklion. It feels too much like a big city. Probably because it is one. In fact, it’s the largest city on the island.Even though I don’t love Heraklion, I have to admit that the location is very convenient for sightseeing. And there are definitely places to stay that don’t scream “big city”.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (12)

The Minoan Palace of Knossos is a short drive from Heraklion and it’s a definite must! You cannot go to Heraklion without visiting Knossos.

Additionally, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is one of the largest archaeological museums in Greece, and it holds an outstanding collection of Minoan artifacts. Don’t miss it!

The Koules or Castello a Mareis another popular attraction in Heraklion not to be missed.

Luxury accommodation: GDM Megaron, Historical Monument Hotel Built in the 20s and classified as a monument, it’s one of the highest-rated luxury hotels in the area.

Archanes

Crete is a large island that consists of many many small villages. Located between the picks of mount Psiloritisandmount Spathi, Archanes is one of Crete’s oldest villages. Archanes is the quintessential Cretan village. Only a short drive from the city of Heraklion – about twenty minutes- it’s definitely worth exploring for its traditional style and picturesque little streets.

Zaros– A mountain village in the heart of Crete.

Built at the southern foothills of Mount Psiloritis, Zaros is known for its lake and the rural scenery.

If what you need is clean and cool air, leafy trees, and long relaxing walks, then Zaros is the best place to stay in Crete.

Hersonissos – Where families stay in Crete.

Hersonissos is a great place to stay in Crete if you’re traveling with kids. Really, there are so many activities for them there. There are water parks, aquariums, museums, stunning beaches (of course), and amusem*nt parks, you name it! There is even a dinosaur park only a short 8-minute drive away.

Budget accommodation Charm Hotel, Hersonissos Being in the heart of Hersonissos’ port, it’s got an unbeatable location and

Tip: My top beach recommendation is definitely Gefyri beach, which is arguably one of the best sandy beaches in Crete.

Where to Stay in Lasithi Region (Eastern Crete)

Elounda – Luxurious Crete.

Elounda is also known as Crete’s resort town. Indeed, just a short 15-minute drive from Agios Nikolaos, the capital of Lasithi, if there is one thing that Elounda is known for, that’s its luxury hotels and beach resorts! So, If you’re looking for a luxurious pampering holiday, Elounda is one the best areas to stay in Crete.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (16)

When it comes to choosing accommodation in Elounda, honestly, it’s a tough call. There are so many great options! Especially, under the luxury accommodation niche.

Here are my top three!

Luxury accommodation:

Elounda Peninsula All Suite Hotel, Six Senses Spa

Porto Elounda Golf & Spa Resort, Six Senses Spa

Cayo Exclusive Resort & Spa

Tip: If you’re feeling like parting from your pool bed for a couple of hours, from Elounda you can also cross over to one of Crete’s most visited sights for a day trip. The small island of Spinalonga is definitely worth visiting for the eerie remainings of what once used to be a leper colony.

Ierapetra – Crete’s sacred town.

The town of Ierapetra is relaxed and relatively quiet, with a variety of traditional tavernas to choose from. Ierapetra is the quiet version of the southern coast of Crete. It’s definitely a good choice if you’d rather stay away from crowds.

While you’re there, definitely do a boat trip to Chryssi Island (also known as Gaidouronisi, the island of donkeys!). Chryssi is paradise on earth with long sandy beaches and shallow turquoise-colored water.

Where To Stay In Crete & TheBest Places to Visit - inspect Greece (17)

If you drive 40 minutes to the east, you can get to Makry Gialos and catch the boat to Koufonisi Lasithiou. Similarly to Chryssi island, Koufonisi is a remote uninhabited island with beaches that I promise will astound you.

Budget accommodation: Astron Hotel Your more budget-friendly option in Ierapetra with spacious rooms and beachfront views.

Mid-range accommodation: Petra Mare Featuring an outdoor pool with a children’s area and many live shows for children, this is THE best beach hotel for families.

Luxury accommodation: NUMO Ierapetra Beach Resort This five-star hotel offers 2 restaurants, 3 bars, 2 swimming pools, and a tennis court, which means you could easily spend your entire vacation in the hotel premises.

Tip: If you visit Chryssi or Koufonisi, don’t forget to take water and snacks with you!

And there you have it! These are my best trips about where to stay in Crete!

As I mentioned at the very beginning of this post, Crete is big, so deciding where to stay and what to do can be overwhelming. But please don’t take this to mean that you have to plan your visit to Crete down to a T.

Not at all! In fact, I would urge you to allow yourself to get lost in Crete. Well, I don’t mean that literally, but my suggestion is to pinpoint some places you want to visit on the map and plan your stay loosely around them.

Do you have any suggestions about where to stay and what to do in Crete? Please leave them in the comment section below.

Many thanks for being here!
