Today was the first day of CIEAEM74 (The International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Teaching) This year’s conference is organised by NMS (The Department of Natural Science, Mathematics and Society) at Malmö University. The theme of this year’s conference is: Mathematics and practices: Actions for futures. What an amazing start it was! Got to listen to inspiring and interesting panel discussions about practices in mathematics education as well as presentations about vocational education, current social phenomena and political knowledge. Since I've known my left from right, I've discovered this mysterious fact about myself: anything I become immersed in starts to manifest in my dreams as well.Let me share a story with you. I vividly remember the time I was preparing for my WAEC exams. The subject was mathematics. I diligently solved numerous problems covering a wide range of topics from the syllabus. Soon, I noticed that I began to solve math problems even in my dreams. It was as if my dreamland had become an extension of my studies, and everything made perfect sense there. I would come up with theories that seemed so innovative, it was almost as if I had created new mathematical concepts. (Of course, don't take that too seriously—I'm just joking about being a professor in disguise! 🙈) Nevertheless, in those dreams, I felt like I was decoding problems as if I were the originator of the very same questions. It was an enjoyable and fascinating experience, but alas, it was fleeting. As soon as I regained consciousness of my surroundings, my dream-born theories dissolved, fading away with my waking state.#funfact

For me, however, complex university maths was way too theoretical and I didn't see its practical benefits. Having had several stochastic modelling classes during the program however, despite them being extremely challenging, made me love maths again and 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞!Last week 𝐈 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 for it. I'm looking forward to pursue a Master's degree on the field, for which the course definitely provided the required skillset!

Educators: exciting news for your Diploma Programme students who are hoping to study at German universities! 🎓🇩🇪From May 2025, DP students will have greater flexibility for entry to universities in Germany.Currently DP students must ensure that one of their three higher level IB subjects is mathematics, chemistry, biology or physics to be able to apply to universities in Germany.But new rules state that DP students will instead need to ensure that one of their three higher level subjects is a language, mathematics or a natural science subject.Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/gHRDtkGY

A welcome and interesting change to German university admissions. I really hope the UK government catches up with its European neighbours and other international systems in ensuring LANGUAGES are valued from early years right up to higher education. Following the official welcome to the 5th Global Forum on the Future of Education and Skills, this session will feature keynote addresses on the importance of interdisciplinary learning & teaching e.g. via STEM/STEAM. Andreas Schleicher (OECD Director for Education and Skills) will address the topic via the recently published OECD Learning Compass for Mathematics as well as the 2025 PISA framework lens, while Saul Perlmutter (Nobel Laureate) would focus on the curriculum on ‘third millennium thinking’ he is currently developing, framed as the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that allow students to build an evidence-based crucial world view in an AI-powered world, and to engage in democratic citizenship with humility and respect.
