How to cook steak in air fryer:

First, let the steak sit at room temperature for about 30 to 45 minutes before you cook it.

Go ahead and preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees. No worries if your air fryer does not have a preheat option. Just let it run for 5 minutes at 400 degrees to warm up the air fryer.

Second, rub olive oil on the bottom of the air fryer basket. I like to use a basting brush to help rub the olive oil all over the bottom.

Also, rub olive oil on both sides of the steak. Once the steak is coated in olive oil, sprinkle the steak seasonings on both sides of the steak.

Finally, put the steaks in the bottom of the basket. Make sure they are in a single layer. If you have a smaller air fryer, you may have to cook the steak in batches.

Let the steaks cook for 4 minutes and flip them over and let them cook another 4 minutes.

If you have any leftovers, they can be refrigerated up to 5 to 7 days.

Tips for Perfect Steak

You can use a thermometer to see if the steak is done. It is handy to have a digital thermometer to ensure the steak is cooked to your liking.

Once the steak has finished cooking, remove it and place on a separate plate. Let the steak rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

FAQs

How long should I air fry a steak? ›

Preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 400 degrees F. Season the steak on both sides with a generous pinch of salt and several grinds of black pepper. Place the steak in the center of the air fryer basket and cook until desired doneness, about 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium and 14 minutes for medium-well.

Do you flip steak in air fryer? ›

Your steak will cook through, if left on just one side. However, because flipping can place a different part of the steak closer to the heating element (for an air fryer, this is at the top), a steak will cook more evenly if flipped halfway through.

Do I put oil on steak before air frying? ›

Just before cooking, brush oil on both sides of the steak, and season the steak with your other choice of seasonings, such as garlic powder and ground black pepper. Then, spray the air fryer tray lightly with cooking oil. Allow the air fryer to preheat to 400 degrees before adding ribeye steak to cook.

How do you cook a steak in an air fryer without it drying out? ›

It's important to preheat the air fryer, as well, allowing it to run with nothing inside of it for about five minutes, set to the max heat. Then, it's time to cook. First, spritz some olive oil or cooking spray on each side of the steak to help the outside crisp.

Is it worth air frying steak? ›

Food Network suggests that thicker cuts of steak, like sirloins, fare best in the air fryer because they get nice and brown on the outside, but remain tender inside.

Does steak get brown in the air fryer? ›

Air fryers circulate hot air to quickly brown the the steak's exterior for golden brown edges that mimic a hard sear. This date-night dinner is practically foolproof as long as you follow a few simple steps.

Why is my steak too tough in the air fryer? ›

A steak that's too thin will cook very quickly and can easily become overcooked and tough. On the flip side, a steak that's very thick will burn on the outside before coming to temperature inside. You'll also want to consider how large the steaks are and if you'll need to fit more than one at a time in your fryer.

How long to let steak rest after air frying? ›

Turn the steak and cook for a further 2 mins. At this point, your steak should be rare to medium rare. Cook for a further 2 mins for medium steaks, plus 2 mins more if you prefer them well-done. Remove the steaks and put on a plate to rest for 3-4 mins.

Is steak better in pan or air fryer? ›

When cooking steak on a pan, oil and fat splatter all around, which can be a pain to clean. The air fryer contains all of the splatter within the device. So, for less experienced cooks, the air fryer perfectly crisps the outside of the steak, which is sometimes more difficult to achieve on the pan or grill.

What to season steak with? ›

There are many spices available for seasoning a steak, with salt and pepper topping the list. However, other spices, like thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, and minced onion, are also good options to enhance your steak's flavor. Or, use a one-and-done approach with Chicago Steak Seasoning.

Do you oil or season steak first? ›

Seasoning for grilled streaks is to first coat the steak with a neutral oil such as grapeseed oil that has a high smoke point. From there, season the entire surface of the steak with sea salt. Salting the steak is the difference between a restaurant steak and a home-cooked steak.

What setting is best for steak in an air fryer? ›

How do you keep meat moist in an air fryer? ›

Using oil in an air fryer is perfectly fine and helps the meat to remain moist and come out looking golden brown. However, a little oil in an air fryer does go a long way. With most cuts of pork, simply rubbing some oil into the meat will be all you need. You can use either regular olive oil or a spray oil.
